The Use and Quick Development of Artificial Intelligence Emphasize Its Risks and Opportunities.

The potential of artificial intelligence to completely transform entire industries has generated a great deal of excitement and discussion as it has grown in popularity. When AI is used properly, it can help diagnose illnesses more accurately, spot possible risks to national security more swiftly, and solve crimes. However, there are also serious issues, particularly with regard to privacy, intellectual property, and education.

The benefits and risks of using AI today.

Three main areas of AI advancement have been the focus of our current study.

When prompted by a user, generative AI systems can generate text (see apps like ChatGPT and Bard, for example), graphics, audio, video, and other types of material. These expanding capabilities could find application in the legal, political, educational, and entertainment sectors, among others. Some of the generative AI systems that are still in development had over 100 million users as of early 2023. One example of a generative AI system in use today is a virtual assistant. Other examples include sophisticated chatbots and language translation software. The benefits of this technology continue to draw attention from throughout the world, as seen by news stories. However, there are also worries, including the possibility that it may be used to copy the works of writers and artists, create code for more potent cyberattacks, and even aid in the creation of new chemical warfare agents. We delve deeper into the operation of this technology in our most recent Spotlight on Generative AI.

Another increasingly popular use of AI is machine learning. Applications of this technology range from military intelligence to medical diagnostics, all requiring sophisticated photo analysis. We examined the application of machine learning to support medical diagnosis in a study published last year. It can be applied to find intricate or hidden patterns in data, find illnesses early, and enhance medical interventions. Benefits, according to our research, include improved access to care, especially for underprivileged groups, and more consistently analyzed medical data.  Our research, however, examined the constraints and bias in the data utilized to create AI tools, which may lower their efficacy and safety and increase inequality for specific patient populations.

Another AI technology that has shown both potential benefits and risks in use is facial recognition. Facial recognition technology has been utilized by state, local, and federal law enforcement to assist in criminal investigations and video surveillance. In order to match visitors with their passports, it is also utilized at ports of entry. Our research has revealed certain issues with the usage of this technology, even though it can be used to identify possible criminals more rapidly or individuals who might not have been identified without it. Even with advancements, bias and flaws in particular facial recognition systems may lead to a higher rate of misidentification for specific groups of people. Concerns have also been raised regarding potential privacy violations by the technology.

Taking responsibility and reducing the hazards associated with AI use.

How can we reduce the dangers and make sure that these systems are functioning well for everyone as the use of AI continues to grow quickly?

Maintaining the effectiveness of AI technologies and protecting our data will require appropriate oversight. In order to assist Congress in addressing the intricacies, dangers, and societal ramifications of developing AI technologies, we created an AI Accountability Framework. Our framework lays out essential procedures to help federal agencies and other organizations involved in the creation, implementation, and ongoing oversight of AI systems be held accountable and use AI responsibly. It is based on four guiding concepts: monitoring, data, performance, and governance. These principles offer procedures and frameworks for managing, running, and supervising the deployment of AI systems.

Although AI technologies have a great deal of promise for good, a large portion of its strength comes from their capacity to surpass human cognition and skill. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly impact both daily life and world events, ranging from commercial products to geopolitical competition among world powers. Because of this, accountability is essential to its use, and the framework may be used to make sure that people manage the system, not the other way around.
